About

Sophie Morrish is a visual artist with a long-standing commitment to art, nature and education.

For the last 23 years, living in Scotland, she has developed both studio and field-based programmes of learning focused on engagement with the natural environment. Through exploration of the phenomenal experience of landscape, Morrish fore-fronts valuing nature for its own sake; complimenting her artistic practice, her work in education has focused on deepening understanding of our relationship to, and as a part of the natural world.

For twelve years Morrish worked as a lecturer at the Glasgow School of Art, during which time she led an annual field trip to North Uist, (Western Isles, Scotland), which played a key role in the undergraduate learning experience.

In 2007 Morrish relocated to Uist and, alongside her own creative practice, continued her commitment to art and the natural environment working for the University of the Highlands and Islands.

Morrish has taught across a broad spectrum of learners throughout the U.K., from Prisoners in HMP Brixton, (London), to primary school children, undergraduates, Masters and PhD students, (including those from the Royal College of Art and University of the West of England).

Internationally she has taught in India, at the Mahraja Sayajirao University, Vadodra, and in China, at the Central Academy of Fine Art, Beijing.

Recently returned to mainland Scotland, Morrish continues her creative practice and commitment to the natural world.

A member of the board of Directors of ATLAS Arts on the Isle of Skye and ‘Land2’ environmental art research group, University of Leeds, Morrish is also a member of the Scottish Contemporary Art Network, a-n network and the Scottish Artists Union.

NOTE: In 2014 the artist was awarded a Scottish Natural Heritage 'EPS' Licence, (European Protected Species), allowing her to legitimately hold natural history specimens protected by law.
