The 2015 Fox Open Art Competition Judges show - a selection of recent paintings by North Uist based artist Sophie Morrish.

Continuing the artist’s theme of perception within the natural environment, the nine paintings that make up this show take as their subject an isolated plantation on North Uist, in the Outer Hebrides. Each work evolves from a place where the artist found evidence of animal activity - gaps created by red deer at the edge of the wood appear as portals, broken branches as evidence of passage, wallows and eagle perches places where the animals presence lingers, almost imperceptibly.

The paintings reflect these elusive qualities through a combination of limited palette and overlaid varnish images that reveal and disappear as the viewer moves in relation to the work, striking a delicate balance between their figurative and material qualities to mysterious and evocative effect.
